Law school outcomes research

Law school graduate outcomes, five and ten years out

Where your graduates practice, which firms and markets hire them, how their careers move after the first job, and how that compares with the schools you compete with. Built for career services, admissions and deans.

The problem

First-job statistics stop where the career starts

Employment reports describe a class ten months after graduation. They say little about where alumni are practicing five years later, which firms keep hiring them as laterals, how many reach partner, or how a school's share of a local market compares with its peers.

That is the story prospective students, employers and donors actually care about, and most schools can only tell it with anecdotes. We tell it with the full picture of where your alumni practice today.

What we do

How we work on it

The full outcomes study

A complete report on where your alumni practice today: markets, employers, practice areas, seniority and career paths, benchmarked against peer schools you choose.

Market share in your home market

Your share of attorneys at law firms in your city and region, for all classes and for recent classes, against the other schools feeding the same market.

Employer relationship mapping

Which firms hire your graduates most, which hire them as laterals later, and which large local employers are hiring from your peers but not from you.

Annual refresh

The same study re-run each year, so career services and admissions can show the trend, not a single snapshot.

Deliverable

What a study covers

Aggregate figures only, never individual alumni records. Every section says where its numbers come from and which population it covers.

Where alumni practice

Attorneys by metro and state, all years and recent classes.

Top employers

The law firms that employ the most alumni, and the ones hiring recent classes.

First firms and moves

Where careers start and where they go next, including lateral moves.

Practice and seniority

Practice-area mix and the share of alumni at associate, counsel and partner level.

Peer comparison

The same measures for the schools you compete with, matched by class year so the comparison is fair.

Beyond law firms

In-house, government and other paths from professional network data, labeled separately from the law firm figures.

Who we work with

Career services offices

Building employer relationships and showing students where a degree from your school leads.

Admissions and marketing

Telling a credible, data-backed outcomes story to prospective students.

Deans and leadership

Understanding the school's position in its home market and against peer schools.

Alumni relations and development

Knowing where alumni concentrate and which employers are deepest with the school.

Why us

Market evidence from people who hire lawyers for a living

We map where attorneys practice across the U.S. legal market every week to run searches. The same view, aggregated to a school, shows where your graduates go and how their careers move, which a ten-month employment survey cannot.

Our sister firm, Voll Recruiting, places attorneys at law firms across the country, so we see what lawyers are offered, why they move and how long seats take to fill, every week. See how we work and where our data comes from.

FAQ

Questions

How is this different from the ABA employment data?

The ABA employment summary covers a single class about ten months after graduation. Our study covers alumni across many class years, where they practice now, how they moved and how that compares with peer schools.

Do you share information about individual alumni?

No. Studies are aggregate. We do not deliver lists of named alumni, and small groups are suppressed so no individual can be identified.

Does it cover graduates outside law firms?

Yes, with a caveat we state in the report. Law firm careers are covered in the most depth. In-house, government and other paths come from professional network data, which is labeled separately because it counts a different population.

Can we choose the peer schools?

Yes. Most schools pick three to six peers, usually the schools that compete for the same students and the same local employers.

Do you place graduating students?

No. This is a research engagement only. Our sister firm recruits experienced attorneys, not graduating students, so there is no placement interest in the findings.
